Based in Barcelona, Isern Serra founded his eponymous interior design studio in 2008, and today is one of the most versatile design firms on the Spanish scene. With delicacy and cultural sensitivity, he develops an architectural language that takes materiality and concept into account in each project. The result is contemporary, vibrant and essential forms with clear Mediterranean roots. The purity of lines contrasts with the richness of textures, resulting in a tactile, serene and timeless design. The raw with the elaborate, sophistication with nudity, the traditional with the digital, the sculptural with synthesis, the real with the dreamlike. It is a vernacular simplicity with a contemporary look.
All his environments incessantly invoke the sensitive and the human. They are singular places, structures and objects, capable of evoking unique atmospheres, and that mix reality with imagination. In them, the senses and the physical experience of space, textures and light place people at the center.
Functionality, durability and warmth are the main components of Serra's work. The combination of traditional and artisanal techniques with more experimental contemporary processes, neutral colors, unique and bespoke pieces or local features characterize the studio's projects, which include furniture, lighting, creative direction, spaces, exhibition installations and more. It is this multidisciplinary, immersive and global approach to design that is redefining the new interiors in our country. Text by Rocío Ley
“It is in our hands to make progress, modern building systems and prefabrication possible while preserving the human quality of the popular constructions of the past. One of the most important problems for a modern architect is to make progress compatible with the humanity radiated by the old constructions”. José A. Coderch de Sentmenat. Historia de unas castañuelas (COAM Magazine), 1987.

Isern Serra (Barcelona, 1981) studied Space Design at the Eina school in his hometown. After completing his final year at the Politecnico di Milano, he moved to Belgium to work for the company Fractal. In 2005 he returned to Barcelona and joined Antoni Arola's studio, where he discovered the importance of light and awakened his interest in exhibition spaces. In 2008 he decided to open his own firm, in search of beauty in formal simplicity. In 2020, with the project of his own house, comes a turning point: the studio opens to the world and begins to recognize itself. He combines his professional career with teaching, his work has been exhibited all over the world and he is part of the prestigious AD100 list.

There is something that refers to the past and the future in Isern Serra's spaces but that, nevertheless, serves as a portrait of the present. Isern is at the crossroads of the classics of Catalan modernity -Sert, Milá, Coderch- with the almost impossible futurism of a render. Isern Serra's imprint updates the Mediterranean but is not a slave to a canon that, today, survives as a luxury object in Menorca or Formentera. In Serra's works there are more cooling ducts than Ibizan porches, and there are more rooms made with plasterboard than rational bourgeois lounges. There are curves, work benches, monolithic tables, floor-to-ceiling curtains... Isern's is a monochromatic and scenographic modernity; sober but quite spectacular. And it is more indebted, in the end, to the post-industrial city than to the landscape of Cadaqués.

Isern Serra and his team know how to turn offices into dream homes, they design offices where you could shoot a movie, and their restaurants are luxurious and cozy without the typical status symbols: this, in fact, is possibly the Barcelona tradition that continues most resolutely. You know a city by its restaurants. Serra's style is instantly recognizable, and his clients, both corporate and individual, a who's who of the people who are writing the new chapters of our country's industry and creativity. Or at least that's how we'll like to interpret it, twenty years from now, when we're still writing about him. Text by Daniel Garcia.
