The project consists of the rehabilitation of a local on the fifth floor of a building located in the Clot district of Barcelona. It is a pass-through local, which has a main facade facing Valencia Street and a rear facade that opens the house to a inner courtyard. The task was to recondition 120 m2 offices as a home and studio for the designer Valeria Vasi and the interior designer Isern Serra.
A day area is considered consisting of an open kitchen, dining room and living room, a bathroom and two bedrooms that have to coexist with Valeria Vasi's studio-workshop, where a storage area, a large shelf to display their products and a work table are needed. The first decision was to put the kitchen and living room facing the inner courtyard since it is the quietest area and has sun from nine in the morning until two o'clock in the afternoon. We always enjoyed the idea of having breakfast in the sun.
The studio would be in the central space on a raised floor, which differences the two ambiences without having to build walls, also in the center would be the bathroom that would separate the daytime and public area from the nighttime and more private area. The bedrooms facing Valencia street and receive the afternoon sun. The concept is to create a clean and Mediterranean space, as if it was a large covered terrace.
A very architectural project is suggested where the change of elevation of the central space is turned into a sofa with custom-made cushions and at the same time into circular planters with large plants. The floor finish is in microcement in an off-white color that unifies all areas of the house. We wanted something very neutral and warm at the same time, that would work as an endless space for Valeria's photos.
The open kitchen is located next to the large windows and as a backdrop to the house. We wanted a very open space that generates communication. The kitchen consists of a large central island with an ash wood countertop where the sink and stove are located. The extraction fan is located on the cooktop, eliminating any visual element between the kitchen and the dining room. Behind the island there is an auxiliary wooden cabinet under a large shelf full of objects from the different journeys. The lamps are the Heat Hat from Santa&Cole and the stools are the Nuta from Mobles 114. Between the island and the sofa we wanted something lightweight and flexible so we could move it around and turn the space into a small improvised dinner, so we kept the table from Santa Cole, and we reused the chairs we already had from AOO, the Salvador by Miguel Milà.
A custom-made low cabinet for books, is used to support the cushions of the sofa. The studio consists of a large central table with trestles and a custom-made bookshelf that serves as a showroom of pieces. A large curtained closet serves as both storage and foyer and leads to the night area. An archway leads to the walk-in closet and dressing room. The bathroom is the only space where the microcement finishing is in all planes., ountertop, walls and ceiling. Generating a very warm and pleasant color-block effect. A large bathtub with gresite finish is the main protagonist of the bathroom.
